Fire and Ice

November 29, 2007

On our photo hunt yesterday in Minneapolis, Neeraj drove us to a home he once lived near. He had heard there had been a fire. Here’s what we saw.

The smell was familiar, the intense ashen stench that I’ve known walking through the soot covered interior of my parents’ house, the home of my youth. And the evidence of the destructive, consuming will of the beast that is fire. But also this — this surprising, magical scene, where all the trees and branches surrounding the lot were iced over, frozen with the same water meant to douse the flame. A strange juxtaposition, this fire and ice. From what I understood the man who lived here is okay.

i kind of see it as like beauty exploding out of the destruction of the house. almost like something beautiful was trapped inside that house for so long and it finally couldn’t hold it, and exploded and out came these beautiful frozen branches trying to get free…
